BRiaN'S WoRLD: Where Are They Now?

Being on this page does NOT -in ANY way- mean that the person(s) included is/are a has-been or washed up or anything of the sort. Think of it only as a locator for additional info on your past (and maybe current) faves. I'm sure you sometimes wonder what happened to those stars of the 80s. Well, some of them made it onto other things and continued their acting and musical careers into the 90s. Some of them changed careers completly. Hopefully you can find that special 80s person who you remember fondly in the list. Good Luck!

Before you write me e-mail and start complaining... This section is still in the VERY early stages, as you will notice. I will be adding new people and information as I can. So keep checking back.

We can all learn from this page and help each other by submitting any information that you have about any of our 80s favorites. If you have anything to add or update on any of the folks on this list or think someone should be added then let me know.

Background Info:
Blancmange had originally got together in London of 1978 as L360 when Neil Arthur and Steven Luscombe teamed up at art college, united by their common interest in Kraftwerk and electronic music in general. both had been in bands previously, Arthur with the Viewfinders, Luscombe in Miru, but after recording a number of rough demo's together, they drifted apart. they reformed in january '79, renamed themselves after the english pudding, recorded a Kraftwerk-influenced instrumental 'sad day', and duly sent a tape to club deejay Stevo, whose highly influential 'futuristic chart' adorned the pages of sounds each week. Stevo was sufficiently impressed to include the tape, unadorned, on the 'some bizarre' album, a year or so later - which sold in phenomenal quantities, creating massive reputations for the featured artists, vis; Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, The The, and of course Blancmange (Stevo went on to mastermind Soft Cell's career.)

Meanwhile, during 1979 Blancmange had evolved into a shortlived trio when Arthur and Luscombe teamed up with a drummer, Laurence Stevens. They cut several tracks which were released on the Irene & Mavis EP (nowadays a highly collectable item) on the tiny Blah Music label - however, Stevens was replaced by a drum machine before they undertook their first tour, as part of the some bizarre package. On the back of the 'sampler' album the tour was a huge success, and the resultant media attention led to their cutting further demo's with Martin Ware, of Heaven 17, following which they were offered a contract by London Records.

They got off to a bright start when their first single 'God's Kitchen/I've Seen The World' charted briefly (#65) upon it's release in march '82, as did their next single 'Feel Me' (#45) a few months later. Housed in its evocative LP sleeve, their debut album 'Happy Families' was released in October '82 to decent reviews: 'a calmly assured collection...the flaws are minor and their merits major,' NME:'explosive candescence.. Blancmange set alight the dull skies of popular music', sounds. This all served to propel it into the album charts where it peaked at #30 in a 9 month chart run, spinning off their first major - and ultimately their biggest - hit single 'Living On The Ceiling/Running Thin', which made the top 10 (#7) just before Christmas.

Musically, they were well ahead of the pack, retaining strong experimental elements within a strictly commercial formula, and they were quick to adopt eastern and electro-pop disco influences, which led to the inevitable comparison with Talking Heads. Throughout their career a strong and unusual visual imagery was to play a great part in their success, via their picture sleeves and picture discs, and particularly their live sets, where they had their background projection screen upfront instead of behind them. This could have been down to Arthur's reluctant pop star persona, an awkward looking, gangly guy (well into his thirties), he always gave the impression of being uncomfortable with his front-man role - whilst Luscombe sat their grandly, idly doodling with his synths.

They racked up four further hit singles during 1983 / early 84, firstly the heavily orchestrated 'Waves' (#19), followed by 'Blind Vision' (#10), 'That's Love That It Is/Vishnu' (#33) in 1983 and 'Don't Tell Me / Get Out Of That' (#8), their last top ten song in the spring of '84. Their second album 'Mangetout' was released in may '84 to only slightly less positive reviews: 'nowhere does their humour lapse, or their altrusim falter', SOUNDS. '...excellent technicians, if not great tunsmiths.' RECORD MIRROR; although it must be said, NME had lost much of their earlier enthuasiasm writing it off as; 'a lobotomized Yazoo..' nonetheless, the album promptly made the top 10, peaking at #8, and spinning of a hit single with their unlikely cover of Abba's 'The Day Before You Came', (#22)

A 12-month hiatus before their next release did little to sustain their popularity and their next single 'What's Your Problem?' struggled to make much of an impact, peaking at #40 in September '85, while the third album 'Believe You Me', spent just two weeks on the album charts, peaking at #54 the following month. Their next release 'Lose Your Love' missed out altogether, while their very last single 'I Can See It', just managed to struggle to #71 before ending a thoroughly enjoyable career in May '86. the duo split shortly afterwards and both began writing music for various tv and movie projects, although Neil Arthur returned briefly to the top 50 in February '94 with 'I Love, I Hate'.

Steven Luscombe (1983): 'I do refute the idea that we're just another electronic duo. That's so facile..we think of ourselves as two people who organize sound.. Neil and I can't write music - we tend to see it in blocks of colour..'
