BRiaN'S WoRLD: Music: Faves of 2000

Here's some of my favorite/recommended music for this year. Clicking on the band name will take you to their website. Clicking on the ALBUM COVER or ALBUM NAME will let you purchase that particular CD through AMAZON.COM.

2000 was somewhat of a mediocre year for music. I mean, sure, I did get a new XTC album and a new Peter Gabriel album (sort of), but most everything seemed kind of bland. Here are a few albums which did get my attention.
Crowded House - "Afterglow"
Capitol
Pretty good for a "B-sides" cd. Now available in the US! If you're a Crowded House fan then this is a good album. If you're not then don't bother.
Michael Penn - "MP4 (days since a lost time accident)"
Epic/57 Records
My favorite Michael Penn record is "March" and that will probably never change, but that doesn't make this record a bad record. In fact, this is a damn fine album. It's his first in a few years and certainly overdue. But well worth the wait.
Nada Surf - "The Proximity Effect"
(dropped by Elektra)
Finally available on another label after being dropped from Elektra (leaving this album unreleased). This is one of the last records I worked while at Elektra. Unfortunately, the band was dropped just before the release date. The album never made it to stores on any label (at least in the US) until this year. It's a real shame because this is a really fine record. I have seen a few copies floating around in used record stores. Since it was serviced to radio and promos were made you may see it around with the Elektra label.
Scritti Politti - Anomie and Bohemie
Virgin (US)
The first record from Green Gartside in over a decade. I bought the import last summer when it was released, but it is available now in the US. Definitely worth a listen. Green just seems to be able to write nearly perfect pop songs.
Electronic "Twisted Tenderness"
Koch Records
A good album. I like it alot. Worth checking out.
Olive - "I'm Not In Love"
Maverick (CD-Single)
A very nice remake of the old 10CC song. Worth checking out. I haven't heard the full album, but I guess I should. I liked their previous album.
Catherine Wheel "Wishville"
Columbia
Great band on CD and live. I've seen them a few times. This is NOT my favorite album of theirs, but there are some good songs on this CD.
Jill Sobule "Pink Pearl"
Beyond/BMG
Jill writes a damn good song. I'm not a huge fan, but big enough to buy any album she puts out. There's always well written and fun/entertaining songs.
Everclear "Songs From An American Movie: Volume One"
Capitol
I've been an Everclear fan for a few years. I like this album a lot. No surprises here, just great tunes.
Peter Gabriel "OVO: The Millennium Show"
Realworld (UK)
Peter is one of my all-time fave artists. This cd has grown on me, but I would have preferred if Peter
had done all of the vocals instead of just a few.
Aimee Mann "Bachelor Number 2"
SuperEgo Records
I'm more of an Aimee Mann fan than Til Tuesday. I liked some Til Tuesday songs, of course, but her solo stuff is better. Her last album was a little bit disappointing, but this one is really good. She's pretty good live and pretty nice in person. I met her a few years back when Dave Gregory (XTC) was playing in her band and dating her. They were both nice.
Supergrass "Supergrass"
Virgin
This is a super Supergrass album. (hee hee) Nice and rock/poppy.
Foo Fighters "There Is Nothing Left To Lose"
Roswell/RCA
I'm a big Foo Fighters fan. (Hey! No fat jokes!) This is the best Foo Fighters album so far. It's full of great songs. I think my favorite is "Stacked Actors".
Trinket "Set To Explode"
RCA
This is a great cd. I can only compare it to a lot of the late 80s/early 90's Manchester sound from bands (like Soup Dragons, Charlatans, etc) with more of an edge.
Simply Red "Love And The Russian Winter"
EastWest
XTC "Wasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2"
TVT
I've been an XTC fan for many many years. I really do like this album, but in my opinion it's not as good as some of their earlier work. There's plenty of good songs on this album though.
Deckard "Stereodreamscene"
Reprise
This album sounds really good also. Modern/Alt rock but better than what the radio plays. I hear a bit of Radiohead influence on some songs.
Radford "Radford"
RCA
This is a cd I found on Tower's listening station and had to get it. I really like it alot. Like Deckard, this is your basic modern/alt rock band but better than most.
Moby "Play"
V2
I'm not a huge Moby fan, but I do like a fair amount of his stuff. This is a good album. Lots of nice beats and textures.
VAST MUSIC FOR PEOPLE
Elektra
I really liked the first VAST cd a lot! It was very different from this album though. This one is more rock to me than the lush NIN meets Enigma sound of the last album.
ON "Shifting Skin" Epic
This is a wonderfully retro sounding album. Like a darker Yaz with a different vocalist or perhaps a NIN album had it been done in the early 80s.
The Eels Electro-Shock Blues
Dreamworks
An older album that I just re-discovered. I really like this cd. Pure genius.

Best Soundtracks and Compilations of 2000
Various Artists - "Metal Rules" (A tribute to the bad hair days)- Priority
This is a cool collection of metal/hard rock hits from the 80s. 14 cuts of today's bands doing your old head-bangin' faves.
