BRiaN'S WoRLD: Music: Faves of 2001

Here's some of my favorite/recommended music for this year. Clicking on the band name will take you to their website. Clicking on the ALBUM COVER or ALBUM NAME will let you purchase that particular CD through AMAZON.COM.

Radiohead AMNESIAC
Capitol Records
A really nice album. I like it alot. Worth checking out.
Burning Airlines IDENTIKIT
deSoto Records
A great new album by one of the best bands in the DC area. There's lots of great tracks on this album. I like them all.
Jason Falkner "Necessity: The 4-Track Years"
Spin Art Records Just some B-sides, demos, and alternate versions of older songs. Great for a Jason Falkner fan- skip it otherwise.
Jill Sobule "I Never Learned To Swim"
Beyond/BMG
A nice compilation of hits, rare tracks, and a few new tracks. Jill's music is smart and funny all at the same time. You should really see her live.
Everclear "Songs From An American Movie: Volume Two"
Capitol
Everclear has been a favorite of mine since I heard their first album several years back. This one is not my favorite out of all of them, but it's certainly still a great album. I've seen them a few times in concert and they rock!
Garbage BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE
xxxx Records
I'm a big Garbage fan. I've waited a long time to hear something new from them. I wasn't let down. The faster paced songs on this album are the stand-outs for me and there are a lot of them. Track number 7 ("Go Baby Go!") is so beautifully 80s retro I thought it was a new wave disc from the early eighties for a moment.
Jude KING OF YESTERDAY
xxxxxx
I really liked Jude's first record so I decided to pick this up. I'm glad I did. It is outstanding. Not quite as good as NO ONE'S REALLY BEAUTIFUL, but still full of catchy tunes.
Better Than Ezra CLOSER
xxxx
I've always enjoyed this band's music and their live shows are lots of fun. This record is not bad. It really starts off great, but after about track eight it kinda starts to get old for me. I still highly recommend it. Definitely worth a listen.
Rival Schools UNITED BY FATE
XXXXX
Features members from the band Quicksand. Not a bad record. A little heavy at times, for me, but overall a good rockin record.
Motion Picture Soundtrack JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS
Epic Records
What a great album. Kay Hanley from Letters To Cleo sings. And I've heard that both Jason Falkner and Matthew Sweet helped write and record this record. It certainly sounds like it in parts. The movie may suck, but the soundtrack kicks ass!
Eve 6 HORRORSCOPE
RCA/BMG
I think this is the best album they've done so far. In fact I was totally blown away by how good this record was.
Motion Picture Soundtrack JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK
xxxx
I've been a huge Kevin Smith fan for a few years now. The movie and the music within are great and the soundtrack features music actually heard in the film- unlike a lot of other soundtracks nowadays. The sound bites from the movie are hilarious.
Various Artists THE BRAT PACK YEARS
Mars Entertainment
This is a really nice 80s compilation- And I'm not just saying that because I wrote the liner notes. The concept is easy: "songs that were featured in Brat Pack movies of the 1980s". 14 Tracks (some hard to find) from movies like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Weird Science, and others plus a great version of Thompson Twins "In The Name Of Love". This is the only place to find the Inxs track "Do Wot You Do" (from The Breakfast Club) other than the actual soundtrack. The booklet includes a short movie trivia quiz. A great concept that could certainly be expanded to a "Volume Two". It was released on November 6th.
Motion Picture Soundtrack ZOOLANDER
xxxx
Not a great album- but a good album. Lots of 80s covers and originals such as Herbie Hancock, Wham!, and two versions of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax".
Collective Soul BLENDER
Atlantic Records
This is a great cd. I've been a Collective Soul fan since the beginning and all of their albums are good. This is not the best of them, but it is still a damn fine record.
Marvelous 3 READY SEX GO!
HiFi/Elektra
This is a kick-ass album by a band who is amazing in concert. I think this is the best thing they've done so far. Check out the albums and their show!
XTC "WASP STAR: Apple Venus Volume 2"
TVT
One of my all-time favorite bands. Why must it take so long for them to put albums out?
Laurie Anderson LIFE ON A STRING
Nonesuch Records
This album if kind of a cross between her more musical albums of the last few years with a hint of her early work (which was my favorite). A nice record.
The Verve Pipe UNDERNEATH
RCA/BMG
I'm a big Verve Pipe fan. This album is really good and will grow on you immensely.

Best Soundtracks and Compilations of 2001
Danny Elfman PLANET OF THE APES XXXXX
Once again Danny Elfman delivers a fresh new soundtrack for Tim Burton. This thing is chock full of percussion and it fits the film very well. Too bad the film sucked. I wish Tim Burton would start doing something original again.
